It's not uncommon to want to take snorkeling lessons if you've never tried the sport before. By taking a lesson, you learn the basics of how to snorkel and the different types of equipment you use. Most likely, you'll only need a lesson or two to feel comfortable enough to go snorkeling on your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the closest program to you. Your best bet is to check beach towns and island resorts.

  2. Step 2

Book a snorkeling lesson through a diving center. Most diving centers only hire experienced instructors who have gone through the accreditation process. Inquire about the different types of snorkeling lessons offered.

  3. Step 3

Confirm if the equipment is included with the lesson or if you need to bring your own. For a snorkeling lesson, you'll need a mask, snorkel and fins.

  4. Step 4

Take a private or group lesson. You'll pay more for the private lesson, but you get individualized instruction that explains the basics of snorkeling.

  5. Step 5

Meet with the instructor before you start your lesson. Go over what you'll learn during the dive, safety precautions and ask him any questions that you may have before you get in the water.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan to go snorkeling often, buy your own equipment before the lesson. Rent equipment only if you're not sure if you'll like snorkeling.
  • The instructor should base the lesson's dive around your skill level. Beginners typically take lessons in calmer waters, but still get to see points of interest underwater.
