The golf chip is a tricky shot that takes practice to perfect. However, spending too much time finding the right grip could be a waste. The best approach is to add minor adjustments to the grip you're already using to achieve a smooth swing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wedge
  • Golf balls
  1. Step 1

Choke down on the wedge or iron to lower your grip. Place your hands below the usual spot used, when hitting an iron shot. This puts hands closer to the ball, giving you more control over the movement.

  2. Step 2

Find the right spot to grip. Move your grip up and down the club until you feel the control you need for the best chip.

  3. Step 3

Concentrate on ball placement and stance while using your normal grip. Shift your focus from your hands and wrists to accomplish the chip.

  4. Step 4

Keep your left wrist straight. Flicking or jerking the wrist to get under the ball will not produce a good chip. A solidly hit chip with a smooth stroke moves the ball into better position.

  5. Step 5

Lead the golf club with your hands. Your hands must be ahead of the club head all the way through your swing when chipping.

  6. Step 6

Practice chipping by using several balls at one time and work your way through a course of targets to feel the right amount of hand adjustment and swing.
