Step 1
Buy a tandem when two bikers of different abilities want to ride together. Tandems are also good for couples in which one person has physical limitations or for two strong riders who want to take their cycling to a whole new level.
-
Step 2
Choose the front of the bike based on the leader's size. The captain should be able to straddle the bike with both feet firmly planted on the ground. This allows the stroker in back to spin the peddles into position.
-
Step 3
Examine the rear compartment. The "stroker" doesn't have to plant his feet on the ground since the only time he will get on or off is at the end of the ride. Purchase a tandem bicycle with a rear compartment 1 or 2 inches shorter than the front.
-
Step 4
Find a tandem bicycle that allows a comfortable distance between the captain and the stroker. Rear tubes should be long enough for comfort, but not so long as to create weight and handling issues.
-
Step 5
Test drive numerous bicycles before making your final decision. This is especially true if you are new to tandems. The overall comfort and confidence of each rider should be your primary concern.
