Step 1
Decide whether you're going for a day look, a glamorous evening look or a pure costume look. Keep eye makeup minimal for a day look, or go all out with especially long lashes and thick eyeliner for a costume.
-
Step 2
Put on your regular foundation, and top it with a light dusting of loose powder to help your eye makeup stay in place.
-
Step 3
Select your eyeshadow colors. Most 1960s looks used at least two shades: a main color and a highlight. You can also add a third color to draw attention to the crease of your eyelid, making your eyes look more deeply set. Choose anything from white eyeshadow to a lighter version of your main color choice for your highlight. Greens, blues and grays were all popular in the 1960s.
-
Step 4
Sweep the main color across your entire lid. For daytime, make this a light coat of color. For a more dramatic look, apply it thickly to entirely obscure your skin color. Add the highlight under your eyebrows, and add the darker color in the crease.
-
Step 5
Use liquid eyeliner, applying it all the way around your eye or along the top lid and three-quarters of the way around your lower lid. Extend the line out from your natural lash line for the Cleopatra look, or create a double-thickness of liner on your top lid for extra eye emphasis.
-
Step 6
Choose between your natural lashes or fake eyelashes. You can achieve the best retro look if you use fake eyelashes at least on your top lashes. If you opt to go natural, use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes.
-
Step 7
Apply fake eyelashes if you choose to, then coat your top and bottom lashes with thick mascara. In the 1960s style, mascara was anything but natural-looking, and women often sought to create lashes that clumped together into spikes.
