Spreadsheets are computer programs that can help you track your expenses, balance your checkbook or create a budget. One popular aspect of spreadsheet software is the automatic math; the computer does the calculations for you. If your spreadsheet contains two cells with formulas that you need to add together, your computer can easily produce their sum.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Key in Your Formula

Step1
Create the necessary formula. Start by keying in the = sign. This tells the computer it must perform calculations.
Step2
Type in the cell identifier for the cell containing the first sum you want to add. Then type the + key, followed by the identifier for the cell containing the second sum you want to add. The cell identifier is simply the letter at the top of the column including the cell with which you are working, followed by the number of the row the cell is in. For example, cell A1 identifies the first cell in the first column of the spreadsheet.
Step3
Click the green check mark to the left of the formula bar to accept the formula as typed. The formula bar is the white box just above the spreadsheet in which you keyed in your formula.

Click in Your Formula

Step1
Begin your formula by typing the = sign. Again, this lets the program know you are going to perform some calculations.
Step2
Use your mouse to click on the cell that contains the first sum you want to add. Then type the + sign to tell the program you are looking for a sum.
Step3
Point your mouse to the cell with the second sum you need to add and click.
Step4
End your formula by clicking the green check mark to the left of the formula bar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your initial formulas are correct. If these are wrong, their sum will also be wrong. Save yourself stress later by making sure these are right before you begin.
