Treating patients with nervous system issues and psychiatric disorders is the daily challenge of a neuropsychiatrist. Exploring this medical specialty requires many years of study and research, but at the end you will be working in a fascinating field.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Attend college and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in premed, biology or another medically related field.
Step2
Take the MCAT exam during your senior year of college. Acquire letters of recommendation, participate in community service or research and apply to medical school. Excellent grades are a must.
Step3
Gain admittance to an accredited medical school. Get experience in the medical field with internships or employment if your application is not accepted. Apply again to medical school and note your medical internship or experience. Students with low grades or MCAT scores may want to initially pursue this path to medical school.
Step4
Study medicine for three years. Graduate medical school and complete a residency at a teaching hospital in neurology and psychiatry, each a four-year program.
Step5
Earn a fellowship in neuropsychiatry or behavioral neurology following your residency in psychiatry or neurology. Qualify to specialize in neuropsychiatry. The fellowship will last at least one year.
Step6
Receive designation as a specialist in neuropsychiatry after demonstrating extensive experience in the field.
Step7
Find a job with the neuropsychiatry department of a hospital, clinic or research facility. Private practices and clinics exist in this medical specialty.
