1
Contact an agency that staffs for caregiver positions. Determine which type of caregiver setting you wish to work in. Choose between hospice care for terminally ill patients, rehabilitation, child care, handicapped or disabled caregivers and other possibilities. Ask the agency which skills you will need for your chosen area.
-
2
Work as a caregiver in an entry level position, build up your skills, and then move into a better position. Find an agency that hires newbies and people with few skills.

3
Get into shape. Caregiving requires strength. Condition your back muscles to pick up the child or elderly. Condition your arm muscles to lift heavy objects. Build up your endurance to get through the day.
-
4
Condition your mind. Take a class in counseling or mediation. Learn how to listen to people in pain. Learn to understand to what people are telling you. Caregiving is as much an emotional job as a physical job. Make sure you can handle the emotional side.

Keep your family first. Leave some room for the loved ones in your life who need you. Don't get so wrapped up in the pains of the world that your family suffers. If a patient or person you are giving care to gets to be too much, let someone know. You may need to make a change.
