At some point, we all have to face criticism, some of it constructive, some it downright cruel. There are ways to accept criticism at work with grace and dignity, and there are ways to make any criticism constructive.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be attentive. Instead of thinking about a retort, take notes and stay engaged with your critic says. Accept the criticism by not taking it personally and making it be about doing the work right.

  2. Step 2

Ask the right questions. Never try to lay the blame for your mistakes or work habits on someone else. Instead, ask questions that will help you learn and grow in your position.

  3. Step 3

Take a proactive approach to implementing the suggestions. Start immediately to make positive changes.

  4. Step 4

Tell yourself that it is a learning experience, and don't beat yourself up if you have been criticized for your work. Accept advice courteously.

  5. Step 5

Thany your critic. It may not have been easy to listen to the critique, but be polite and thank the person for taking the time to point our your mistakes.
