How to Create a Book Review Assignment Mind Map

Help your students tackle book reviews by creating a Book Review Assignment Mind Map. The map serves as an effective tool that helps students mentally note specific information before they read. It also aids them in dividing the entire book into main and sub-categories so that they can write organized book reviews.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a computer program that supports graphics and text. Go to the file menu and open a new document. Title it, "Book Review Assignment."

    • 2

Select five main categories students must describe in the book review. The most standard categories include "Setting," "Characters," "Author Information," "Plot" and "Personal Reaction."

    • 3

Phrase each main category as a single sentence. For example, "Describe the story's setting."

    • 4

Insert five text boxes on the document. Put one main category sentence in each box.

    • 5

Consider how to divide each main category into at least four subcategories. Write each subcategory as a single sentence. An example under the setting category is "Identify when the story takes place."

    • 6

Add enough smaller text boxes to the document to cover each subcategory. Put one subcategory in each box. Extend arrows from the subcategory to the main category it defines.

    • 7

Format the mind map to make it visually appealing to students. Insert the title in a large bubble at the document's center. Add different colored background shading behind the title and each main and subcategory.
