How to Find Sand Crabs

As odd as it sounds, finding sand crabs can be a soothing experience. If you've never done it before, you're in for a treat. Nature's early morning serenity and beauty is a great enticement to the sport of sand crabbing.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a small plastic rake and bucket at a local home improvement, hardware store or toy store.

    • 2

Go to the beach in the pre-dawn hours. Since finding sand crabs is a solitary process, go to a beach that's not crowded.

    • 3

Carry your crabbing tools. Walk slowly along the edge of the beach in a zigzag fashion. Look for sand crabs as the waves recede from the edge of the beach. You'll see their telltale trails as they attempt to run back into the water.

    • 4

Gently rake the crabs to prevent them from escaping back into the water or burrowing into the sand. Pick up the crabs with the shovel and place them in the bucket. Add some water to the bucket so the crabs won't bake in the hot sun. Repeat the process until you have as many as you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless you're an early morning type, pack the car the night before. It will give you one less thing to prepare in the morning.
