Connect a PlayStation 3 to your local area network (LAN) to access online gaming features, the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Store. It also gives you the ability to view videos and pictures stored in your computer on the television screen.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Connect to a Wired Network

  1. Step 1

Connect the PlayStation 3 to the LAN router using an Ethernet cable.

  2. Step 2

Log in to the PlayStation 3 and select "Network Settings" from the Settings menu.

  3. Step 3

Select "Internet Connection Settings" and choose the "Easy" option to confirm the auto-detection of the network. Verify the network settings displayed with the router's specifications. Make adjustments, if needed, and save.

  4. Step 4

Choose "Test Connections" to reconnect the PlayStation 3 to the LAN and the Internet.

  5. Connect to a Wireless Network

  6. Step 1

Scan for a wireless network signal. Choose the "Easy" option under the PlayStation's "Internet Connection Settings." Select "Wireless," and then "Scan."

  7. Step 2

Choose the network access point to use. Check the identification name (SSID) for the access point against the host computer and router of your wireless LAN.

  8. Step 3

Apply network security settings based on the current LAN security setting. Enter your encryption key if a security setting is in place. Otherwise, select "None" to continue without security settings.

  9. Step 4

Save your settings and test the wireless connection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Newer PlayStation 3 models can automatically configure wireless network settings. An "Automatic" option is listed after the "Scan" option on these models.
  • Unplug the Ethernet cable from the PlayStation 3 if you are switching from a wired network to a wireless connection.

on 3/12/2009 How do you do a lan setup without connecting to a router? e.g. PC to PS3. My PC is linked wireless to the modem because it is only a 1 port modem and not a 4 port router. I linked my PS3 to my PC through a 'crossover ethernet cable" and it does not work. This setup can be used for the Xbox 360 but only using a 'crossover' ethernet cable and not a normal ethernet cable because the Xbox think's it's a PC to PC lan setup. The PS3 also suggests it is like a PC therefore I used a crossover cable. Is the cable the problem or something else? can someone please email the solution to:lilvinh@email.comThank you.
