How to Photograph Families

Many people treasure their family portraits and like to display them throughout their homes. When photographing families it is wise to plan accordingly to bring all of the details together.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm with the family about what kind of family portrait that they would like. Discuss various settings, colors, and poses.

    • 2

Inform the family about what you have for ideas. Explain what kinds of colors may look nice together. Tell the family to avoid wearing clothing with logos or designs of any type. Explain that clothing with logos or designs takes away from the main subject of the family portrait.

    • 3

Think about composition and how you would like to place the family members together. It is best to get all of their heads close together so that there is no extra space in the photograph and so that you can crop the picture later. When the family arrives to the session, create various poses and snap away. Rearrange the position of the family members so that they have a variety of pictures to choose from.

    • 4

Set up for the session. Take away any furniture or background items that may serve as a distraction for the family photograph.

    • 5

Look around and decide if you will need extra lighting for the family. Bring along extra flashes, strobe lights, and reflectors for the photography.

    • 6

Use a tripod if necessary. If you have a very steady hand and can avoid motion blur, then a tripod will not be needed.
