You might use a cup holder to keep a soda cool. You might use a cup holder as an insulator to keep a hot drink warm. No matter what kind of drink you put your cup holder on, you can crochet a cup holder in the same way.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the diameter top of your cup with a tape measure. To make sure your tape measure is an even height all the way around, turn the cup upside down before you measure it.

  2. Step 2

Crochet a chain that is as long as the length you measured in Step 1. Measure how many stitches are in an inch, and write that number down. Join the chain into a circle using a slip stitch.

  3. Step 3

Work the first row as a single crochet. When you get to the end of the row, do not join the stitches. You will work the rest of the cup holder in a spiral pattern.

  4. Step 4

Determine your cup holder's decreases. Take the tape measure and measure the narrowest point. Use the number of stitches per inch that you calculated in Step 2 to determine how many stitches you will end with. Subtract this number from the number you chained in your first row. This is the number of stitches you will need to decrease. You will only need to do this if your cup tapers. If it does not, move on to Step 5.

  5. Step 5

Continue to crochet your cup holder in a spiral. You can use single crochet, half \-double crochet or double crochet. Decrease your stitches as necessary.

  6. Step 6

Tie off the yarn of your cup holder after you crochet a piece just shorter than the height of your cup. After tying off, cut the extra yarn and weave it into the piece.
