Step 1
Research and choose the type of cloth diaper that will best meet your family's needs. If you're primarily cloth diapering to save money, prefolded and fitted are the least expensive, however, they require putting two pieces on at every change because a waterproof cover must go over them. Pocket diapers require more time to prepare because you have to stuff the lining, however, once they're stuffed they're very easy to use and care for. All-in-one diapers take more time to dry because they are thicker, but they are also the most convenient for day care centers to use.

Step 2
Consider the amount of diapers you will need to purchase. On average, two dozen diapers will last your baby through two full days. This is a standard amount most parents purchase. If you are using diapers that have different sizes, you will need two dozen diapers for each size, increasing your initial cost. Many pocket diapers now come in a one-size diaper which eliminates your need for purchasing additional sizes.

Step 3
Purchase the cloth diapers from a local retailer, if possible. While most cloth diapers can be bought online, buying diapers from someone local will not only save you shipping, but there is often a discount given.

Step 4
Buy any other materials that you'll need. If you're using prefolds, you will need either diaper pins or Snappis. You will also need to purchase cloth diaper wipes and wipe solution, along with a diaper pail and washable wet bag. Two dozen cloth diaper wipes is a standard amount for getting started.

Step 5
Wash all diapers before putting them on your child according to the manufacturer's instructions. Cotton cloth diapers require one or two washings before their first use. Hemp diapers require more washings and wool diapers require special care using a lanolin soap. Washing cloth diapers first helps them pill and become more absorbent.
