The progressive waltz is the basic waltz step revised so you can dance around the floor rather than in the box, as the waltz is traditionally taught. These instructions are for the lead partner, so reverse them if you are following.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your partner and hold her right hand in your left, and place your right hand over her left shoulder blade. Maintain eye contact with your partner throughout the waltz.

  2. Step 2

Start the waltz by stepping forward with your left foot on the first count.

  3. Step 3

Bring your right foot forward and to the right on the second count. Move your feet in straight lines rather than diagonally.

  4. Step 4

Place your left foot beside your right foot on the third count.

  5. Step 5

Step forward with your right foot on the fourth count.

  6. Step 6

Move your left food forward and to the left on the fifth count, and remember to work in the box formation.

  7. Step 7

Bring your right foot beside your left foot on the sixth count.

  8. Step 8

Navigate around the dance floor in the progressive waltz. Reverse the process to follow a lead's steps, or to dance progressively backward.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add style to your progressive waltz by adding fluidity to your movements. Roll your body into each movement rather than staying stiff.
