Creating a sewn-in elastic casing is good method to learn whether you are an experienced seamstress or a beginner at the sewing machine. It's a simple technique that will enable you to fit your waist perfectly and will give your pants a professional, finished look.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the waistline and cut a piece of elastic approximately 4 inches shorter than your waist measurement. If the elastic is very firm, you may need to make it slightly longer because it won't have as much stretch.

  2. Step 2

Join the elastic end-to-end and place a small piece of cotton fabric over the ends. Zigzag over the fabric and both ends of the elastic. Flip the elastic over and repeat on the other side so the join will be secure.

  3. Step 3

Press the seams of the waistband open. Fold the top of the waistband under about ΒΌ inch, and press. You may find it helpful to stitch the fold with a straight or zigzag stitch, but this isn't required.

  4. Step 4

Turn the waistband wrong side out. Place the elastic on the top of the waistband and fold the fabric over the elastic. The elastic will be between the layers of fabric. Make sure the folded edge of the waistband extends beyond the edge of the elastic so you don't sew the elastic.

  5. Step 5

Using either a regular foot or a zipper foot, sew the waistband by pulling and stretching the elastic as you sew. Take your time and when you get to the last few inches, you will need to use both hands to stretch the elastic evenly along the waistband. Sew a little bit at a time, then stretch it and sew a little more, continuing this way until you reach the end.
