Venus flytraps are fragile carnivorous plants that display a sinister beauty. The propagation of the Venus flytrap comes in two forms, division and leaf cutting. Dividing plants at the root works in the case that smaller plants have already developed. Leaf cutting is for when there are no new plants yet. Tips on both types of Venus flytrap propagation are below.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plant
  • Soil
  • Water
  • Pots
  • Root hormone
  1. Step 1

Take a potted mature Venus flytrap with baby plants growing around it and carefully remove it from the pot.

  2. Step 2

Shake off excess soil gently as you separate the baby plants from the mature plant. Be sure all the smaller plants have separate roots from mature plant.

  3. Step 3

Divide plants from mature plant by carefully pulling them apart where the two plants meet in the rye zone or white area above the roots.

  4. Step 4

Fill individual growing pots with moist potting soil and transplant all of the Venus flytraps mentioned in the preceding steps. Transplant straight into soil and let grow.

  5. Step 5

Peel plant leaves at base of mature plant to utilize the leaf cutting method. Each removed leaf should have a white end. This ensures enough of the rye zone remains to produce new plants.

  6. Step 6

Dip white end of the leaves into root hormone before placing into moist potting soil in a pot.

  7. Step 7

Place the leaf so that it is flat against the top of the soil and secure in place with a little soil at edges. Baby plants grow out from the white end or leaf base.
