Buying a pet turtle requires responsible pet ownership. A pet turtle has to have clean water available to stay healthy. A filter is necessary in any turtle tank to provide clean water for the turtle to swim in and to drink.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the filter style needed; you have two choices. One is an over the back filter. The other is a side entry filter. The style of turtle tank you own will determine the style of filter you need.

  2. Step 2

Choose the filtration type. Filters have different types of filtration such as carbon or mesh. A filter that removes nitrates and nitrites is best for a turtle tank.

  3. Step 3

Check the water flow speed. An adjustable water flow speed is best so you can adjust the current to your turtle's needs.

  4. Step 4

Multiply your turtle tank size by three to determine the correct filter size. Turtles produce more waste than fish produce, so a larger filter is necessary for a turtle.

  5. Step 5

Look at the extra features. Some filters have extra features such as a heater. Decide if you need the extra features.

  6. Step 6

Consider the price value. A more expensive filter is not necessarily the best filter for your needs. Some prices are higher just because of the brand and not because the filter is any better than a less expensive one.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to clean your turtle tank and filter regularly to help keep your turtle happy and healthy.
  • Wash your hands after touching your turtle, its tank or any of its accessories to prevent salmonella.
