How to Gather Tools for Installing a Deadbolt Lock

Give your home an added measure of security by installing deadbolt locks on your doors. Thieves are most likely to break in through your doors and window, so make them as secure as possible. Installing a deadbolt is relatively inexpensive and may qualify you for a discount on your homeowner's insurance. You will need a few basic tools to complete the installation.

Things You'll Need:

  • Deadbolt lock
  • Tape measure
  • Tape
  • Marking tool
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Hole saw
  • Wood chisel
  • Hammer
  • Combination square or level
  1. Step 1

    Open the deadbolt package and look for installation instructions and a template for your lock placement.

  2. Step 2

    Measure for correct placement of your lock with a tape measure.

  3. Step 3

    Tape the template to the door and mark where to drill the holes.

  4. Step 4

    Obtain a standard drill. It can be either cordless or corded.

  5. Step 5

    Gather the necessary drill bits according to lock instructions.

  6. Step 6

    Use a hole saw to drill the hole for the lock cylinder. For steel doors, use a bi-metal hole saw. Plan on using a wood chisel and hammer for installing the strike plate.

  7. Step 7

    Check to make sure your marks are level with a combination square or level.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to install your deadbolt lock. It will take 1 to 3 hours to complete.
  • You can install a deadbolt lock without changing out any of your existing door hardware. Place the deadbolt lock at least six inches above or below existing hardware.
  • Wear safety goggles and a dust mask.
