Christmas is a wonderful holiday to teach toddlers about making crafts. Creating little projects help toddlers feel involved with Christmas activities, during a time when adults are busy finishing tasks in preparation for the "Big Day." Making a paper bag puppet in the shape of a reindeer adds an element of fun for young children during this special time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brown paper lunch bag
  • Brown construction paper
  • Marker pens
  • Scissors
  • All-purpose craft glue or glue stick
  1. Step 1

Place the bag with the folded bottom face up and on top.

  2. Step 2

Fold the bottom two edges at an angle to form the reindeer's face.

  3. Step 3

Trace your toddler's hands on construction paper. Cut out the shape along your traced lines.

  4. Step 4

Glue hand shape "antlers" to the back of the reindeer's head. Place the thumbs side-by-side to give it a more realistic look.

  5. Step 5

Draw eyes, a nose and a mouth for the reindeer's face.

  6. Step 6

Help develop your children's fine motor skills with simple tasks like using a glue stick. If they show interest, have them paste googly eyes or ones made from construction paper as a substitute for drawn eyes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Substitute different colored construction paper for the antlers. Toddlers enjoy dramatic ones like red. Help them identify and remember the names of colors by making reindeer puppets with several colors.
  • Allow toddlers with the strength and attention span to hold and scribble with crayons use a white bag and construction paper instead of colored ones.
  • Crouch behind a sofa or large table for a stage. Mimic snow by draping a white towel on the surface.
