Draw Proportional Hands and Feet When Drawing the Human Form

When drawing the human form, two of the most challenging features are the hands and feet. The hands are important because they are constantly exposed, while the feet are important because they bear the weight and ground the figure.

Instructions

    • 1

Proportion the hands carefully to the entire body. Women generally have smaller hands than men. Short people generally have short fingers, while tall people have long ones. When drawing hands, consider the shape and size of the knuckles and the angles of the wrists.

    • 2

Compare the hand to the size of the face. The end on the middle finger to the wrist is approximately the size of the face from the chin to the top of the forehead.

    • 3

Break the hand down into sections to proportion it correctly and get the right shape. The fingers and palm each account for about half the size of the hand. The fingers are broken down into three sections at the knuckles, and the thumb has two sections.

    • 4

Approximate the feet to be about the size the forearm. Size of feet can vary greatly however. Men generally have larger-proportioned feet than women. Small feet look dainty while large feet can look clumsy.

    • 5

Depict the contours of the feet correctly. The ankle bones are important, with the inner one always higher than the outer. There is an arch in the inner foot, and the heel is rounded.

    • 6

Keep hands and feet in proportion with one another as well. If a person has large feet, they generally have large hands, too.

    • 7

Make the arms the proper length. If the arms were extended straight down, the hits right at the waist, and the fingertips touch at the midpoint between the knee and the hip.
