With origins dating back as far as the Buddha, Thai massage not only works to relax the body and soothe and stretch sore muscles, it also helps to align and balance the energies of the body. Often called Thai yoga, Thai massage uses a variety of ancient stretching techniques. With a few tips, you can add the hip twist technique to your Thai massage repertoire.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large, soft exercise mat
  1. Step 1

Prepare for Thai massage by placing a large soft mat on the floor, as it is traditionally practiced on the ground. Protect and support your client's body as well as your knees by using a large, soft exercise mat which is large enough for your client's body to rest centered in the middle and for your to move around all edges.

  2. Step 2

Begin the hip twist with your client laying flat on her back and rest on your knees on one side of her body. Place your upper hand under her knee and your lower hand on her ankle and gently lift the leg to bent position. Pick up the foot and cross it over the opposite knee so that the sole of her foot rests flat on the floor.

  3. Step 3

Press you lower hand gently into your client's leg, just below his knee and press down gently on his shoulder with your upper hand. Lean your body forward gently, bending the knee further towards the floor on the opposite side. Do not force the stretch, just push as far as the leg moves comfortably.

  4. Step 4

Hold the hip twist for at least 30 seconds before releasing back to the original position and repeating the Thai massage technique on the opposite side.
