How to Use Text Tool in Adobe Photoshop

The Adobe Photoshop text tool allows you to add vertical or horizontal text to any image or canvas. You can set the properties of the text such as font, font size, alignment and color. Keep reading to find out how you can use the Photoshop text tool to add custom text to your documents.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  1. Step 1

    Start Adobe Photoshop and open an existing file that contains an image to which you would like to add text. If you'd like, you can start a new blank canvas to which you would like to insert text.

  2. Step 2

    Choose the "Text" tool from the Photoshop toolbox by clicking on the lower right corner of the tool that is depicted by the letter "T." The options for your text will show up in a pop-up menu.

  3. Step 3

    Select either the "Horizontal Type Tool" or the "Vertical Type Tool" from the "Text" tool menu.

  4. Step 4

    Click on your image or canvas where you want to add the text. You will see a blinking cursor when you do so.

  5. Step 5

    Use the drop down menus on the "Text toolbar" on the top of the screen to choose the font family, font style, font size and anti-aliasing method.

  6. Step 6

    Pick an alignment for the text using the alignment buttons, and click on the color well to select a color for the text.

  7. Step 7

    Add text to your image or canvas by typing from your keyboard. The text will appear where you placed your cursor in the document. If you would like to change any of the text properties, simply select the text with your mouse and make the appropriate changes on the "Text toolbar."
