Syrian hamsters make excellent small pets for adults and children alike. While they do require care as any pet does, bathing a Syrian hamster on a regular basis isn't necessary. Taking regular care of your hamster, including inspecting his skin and hair for anything unusual and taking him for regular veterinarian visits, ensures him a long and healthy life.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Washcloth
  • Water
  • Small bowl
  • Sand
  1. Step 1

Comb a soft-bristled toothbrush through the hair of your Syrian hamster if he has long hair. Long-haired Syrian hamsters can have shavings tangled in the hair and a toothbrush is the gentlest tool you can use to remove this.

  2. Step 2

Check your Syrian hamster often for dirty areas, such as around the anus. Clean the hamster gently with a soft washcloth and warm water as needed. Bathing removes oils from the hamster's coat so it is not recommended.

  3. Step 3

Examine your Syrian hamster frequently for any changes in skin or hair. Changes in his stool can signal a problem as well.

  4. Step 4

Keep your Syrian hamster's cage clean and keep him on a regular schedule of food and water. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise by placing a hamster wheel in his cage. Handle him on a regular basis to give him some human interaction.

  5. Step 5

Make an appointment with a veterinarian who specializes in exotic animals if you have any concerns about your Syrian hamster.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider adding a small bowl of sand to your Syrian hamster's cage. Sand helps remove any grease from the hamster's coat and makes them feel like they're in their natural habitat.
  • If you notice your hamster often has a dirty tail or anus and requires constant washing, make an appointment with the veterinarian. Syrian hamsters can develop a condition called wet tail, which can be fatal if not treated immediately.
