Step 1
Choose a massage oil or lotion that works for you, but will also work for your client. It is best to have one basic oil or lotion for general work. It should be unscented and hypoallergenic. You may keep a variety of other oils on hand for specific purposes, such as herbal oils for aromatherapy or menthol to help relieve muscles, but always ask your client permission before using them.
-
Step 2
Make sure that your massage space is warm enough for your client. Not only do muscles tend to relax when warm, your client will be covered with just a drape, so you want them to be nice and cozy. You may also want to add other calming touches to your space, such as candles, soft music and calming colors.

Step 3
Interview your client before beginning so that you may get a basic idea of their medical background, their experience with massage and their general expectations for the session. This time will also allow you the opportunity to get to know your client, making the massage a bit more comfortable and personal.
-
Step 4
Ask your client to undress and lie underneath the drape, face up, on your massage table. While draping seems obvious to most people, avoid the occasional very embarrassing moment of finding a naked client on the table by informing them beforehand. While it is easiest to perform Swedish massage with your client fully undressed below the drape, some people may find it more comfortable to leave their underwear on. Because your client's comfort level is key, it should be their decision.

Step 5
Begin your Swedish massage session at your clients neck, a great way to help your client relax and start the massage off on the right foot.
