Step 1
Take chest, neck to tail and waist measurements of your dog. If you are making a coat with sleeves measure the height of your dog by measuring from the shoulder to the floor.
-
Step 2
Design or purchase a dog coat pattern based on your particular dog's body shape. For dogs with large rib cages, make sure to design a coat that is wide in the chest area and smaller at the waist. Determine how much fabric you need based on the pattern and measurements.
-
Step 3
Visit your local fabric store for supplies. Find two fabrics: one for the lining and one for the outer layer. The best kind of outdoor fabric is one that is waterproof and won't unravel. Also, be sure to choose a lining fabric that won't irritate your dog's skin.
-
Step 4
Purchase needles made to go through multiple layers of fabric. If you are using a sewing machine, make sure you purchase needles thick enough to go through denim or other heavy-duty fabrics. Also pick up a pincushion, pins, and scissors if you don't already have these items at home.
-
Step 5
Choose a durable thread. Heavy-duty threads will make this coat durable and ensures that your pet's coat will last for years to come. Also buy sturdy Velcro strips to fasten the coat together.
-
Step 6
Buy decorative additions and finishing touches for you pet coat. Choose colorful buttons, iron-on embellishments, ribbon trim, contrasting decorative prints, or anything else that strikes your fancy and pulls the pet coat together.
