How to Use Foundation When Applying Stage Makeup

Stage makeup is not going to look natural to those who are within 1 to 2 feet of you, but up close and personal is not what the stage foundation is for. It is to give your skin an even tone when seen by the audience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean your face thoroughly. This is important, as you don't want to cause acne or any other skin issues with the thick stage makeup you will be using.

  2. Step 2

Pull your hair out of your face. Even if you have a very short hair cut, you should use a head band or tie to make sure you don't have any hair touching your face. If you have longer hair, pull it back in a tight bun.

  3. Step 3

Sit under a very bright light or set of lights. This will help you see how well the coverage of your stage foundation is after each layer.

  4. Step 4

Choose a stage foundation, or combination of foundations, that match your skin tone. It can be a bit darker than your original skin tone, but should not be extremely different unless you are playing a part of a different ethnicity.

  5. Step 5

Use a sponge, and dip it into the stage foundation. It will be thick and it will sometimes have a strange smell, faintly like silly putty.

  6. Step 6

Spread the first layer of stage foundation on your entire face and neck. Be sure to get your hair line, ears, neck and collar bone, if it is going to show through your costume.

  7. Step 7

Apply another layer. It may seem excessive, but the point is to even out your skin tone, and prevent any blemishes or scars from showing through the stage foundation. If you see any uneven spots, you may need to apply three coats of the foundation.
