How to Massage the Upper and Lower Back

For some people, all their stress is internalized and it turns into tension on their upper and lower back. The only way to relieve that tension and pain is through massage. Here are some tips to massage the upper and lower back.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Have your client lie face down on the massage table. Cover his body up to their waist with a blanket or sheet.

  2. Step 2

    Warm up your hands by rubbing the palms together. Put a moderate amount of massage lotion or oil in the palm of your hand. This will keep your hands from sticking to his skin.

  3. Step 3

    Place your hands on the client's back, just below her neck. Apply gentle pressure and rub your hands down the length of her back to spread the oil. Make sure to go in continuous motion to ensure the oil is spread evenly.

  4. Step 4

    Alternate between using the palms of your hands and the outside of your fingers. Form a closed fist and rub down the length of the client's back, with one hand on each side of their spinal cord.

  5. Step 5

    Create friction to warm up the muscles. Rub your palms briskly back and forth on the client's back. Go up and down the entire back, including the back of their shoulders.

  6. Step 6

    Move to the spots that seem tight and tender. Use your thumbs to rub in small circles, loosening the tension.

  7. Step 7

    Use horizontal strokes down the length of the client's back. Start with your hands near the spine, palms down. Slowly move them apart, applying pressure, as you get to the outside of their backs.
