It's difficult to get to know someone when you don't speak the same language. Since Spanish is widely spoken throughout the world, it's likely that you will someday want to communicate with someone in the Spanish language. Learning a few simple Spanish phrases is a good way to meet new people and develop new friendships.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin a conversation by saying,"Hola, como estas?" You've said hello and asked how that person is doing. If someone asks you this question, reply, "Estoy bien," or, "I'm doing fine." Shake hands and say, "Mucho gusto," or "It's nice to meet you."

  2. Step 2

Determine if the person you're speaking with knows any Spanish. "Habla espanol?" means "Do you speak Spanish?" Since you're reading this article, reply, "Hablo un poquito," which means "I speak a little," if someone asks you.

  3. Step 3

Find out someone's name by asking, "Como te llamas?" To tell someone your name, say "Me llamo (name)."

  4. Step 4

Ask, "De donde eres?" if you're curious about where someone is from. Respond to this question with "Soy de los Estados Unidos," if you're from the United States. Say "Soy de Canada" if you're from Canada or "Soy de Inglaterra" if you're from England.

  5. Step 5

Inquire about a person's age by asking, "Cuantos anos tienes?" or "How old are you?" Answer this question with, "Tengo (number) anos."

  6. Step 6

Pose the question, "Estas casado?" to a man or "Estas casada?" to a woman if you would like to know if your new acquaintance is married. Follow up by asking if they have children: "Tienes hijos?"

  7. Step 7

End your conversation with "adios" to say good-bye. If you plan on seeing someone soon, say "hasta pronto." For a casual good-bye, say "hasta luego," which means "see you later."

Tips & Warnings
  • The important part of trying to get to know someone while speaking a foreign language is to keep using your new language. Don't worry if you can't pronounce every word correctly. Your new friend will be pleased with your effort and will not expect perfection.
