Keeping your skis in good working order is the key to a successful skiing trip. When your skis are in disrepair, you increase your chances of injury on the slopes because your skis can grip instead of gliding over the snow, causing you to have an accident. Maintain your skis in order to stay safe on the slopes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get your skis tuned at a ski shop. Allowing a professional to care for your skis ensures that your skis are properly maintained.

  2. Step 2

Wax the bases of your skis. Apply a liquid wax with a cloth, or melt a hot wax onto your skis. Scrape off the excess wax from the edges and buff the surface with a rough pad.

  3. Step 3

Sharpen the metal edges of your skis. File away any uneven areas along the edges to allow them to glide properly without catching.

  4. Step 4

Store your skis correctly. Keep them in a dry area with little or no temperature changes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Waxing your skis is important to keep them waterproof and to allow your skis to glide over the snow. Wax buildup hinders your ski's performance, though, so be careful when you wax them and be diligent about removing deposits on the edges of your skis.
  • Don't over sharpen the edges of your skis. Your skis can't grip properly and can adversely affect your ability to turn well if you sharpen them too much.
