A chair lift helps make skiing an enjoyable experience. The chair lift propels you to the top of the hill and your skis bring you down. While a chair lift reduces the amount of work you have to do to get up the hill, it can be challenging to load and unload the lift.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Enter the lines for the chair lift. If you plan to ride the lift with a friend, go in separate lines next to each other. You can wait for your friend at the front of the line before loading the chair lift.

  2. Step 2

Wait at the front of the line or at the "Wait Here" sign for the people in front of you to load. While you wait, remove your ski poles straps from your wrists and hold your poles in one hand. If you need your poles to help you move forward, do this after you load the chair lift.

  3. Step 3

Move quickly to the load position. The lift operator keeps an eye on your progress and slows the lift if you move too slowly. Look for a line across the floor or a "Load Here" sign.

  4. Step 4

Keep your skis pointing forward and turn your head over your shoulder to watch the chair approach. Chair lifts swing from the momentum, so grab the chair to steady it and you as you sit on the seat. Once you make contact with the seat, scoot to the back of the chair.

  5. Step 5

Lower the safety bar after everyone loads the seat. Pay attention for signs like "Prepare to Unload" indicating the unloading zone. When you see the sign to raise the safety bar, lift the bar.

  6. Step 6

Check for loose clothing caught on the lift and scoot the front of the chair. When your skis make contact with the ground, push yourself up and away from the chair. Follow the hill or turn away from the unloading area.

  7. Step 7

Tell the loading lift operator if you're a beginner. He communicates this to the unloading operator who slows the lift.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your ski tips pointed up as you load and unload to keep your skis from digging into the ground.
