Step 1
Keep a wide selection of cotton fabrics on hand to create quilt pieces as well as a large piece of cotton fabric for the backing. Use a thin cotton flannel blanket or cotton batting for the inside of the quilt.
-
Step 2
Purchase a good pair of comfortable scissors with a 6 or 7 inch blade. Use them exclusively, for cutting fabric and thread. Choose a rotary cutter for cutting through multiple layers of fabric at one time. Review the safety features and select one that allow the blade to be changed with ease.
-
Step 3
Buy a cutting mat that is at least 18 inches square. Select a mat with an ironing mat on the reverse side. Purchase a transparent ruler that is at least 6.5 by 12.5 inches. Keep a fabric tape measure handy.
-
Step 4
Make quilting templates of heavy gauge plastic. Trace the desired patterns and cut out the templates with craft scissors. Use a permanent marker and write the name of each pattern and the dimensions on each template.
-
Step 5
Collect assorted sewing needles and cotton quilting thread to match the fabrics. Have sufficient rust-proof quilting pins on hand as well as a magnetic "pin cushion" for easy access.
-
Step 6
Order the proper feet for the sewing machine to make quilting easier. Have on hand a quarter-inch foot and a walking foot.
-
Step 7
Select a good quality steam iron that can always be available when cutting fabrics or when quilting. Choose an iron with an automatic shut off.
