1
Measure or compare both sides of the Christmas stocking. You have a front piece and a back piece. Place them on top of each other to make sure that they are the same size. If not, this is the time to make your adjustments.
-
2
Place one of the quilted stocking sides face up on your sewing table. Face up will mean that the finished side or the side that you will see when finished is facing up on the table.
-
-
3
Turn the other quilted stocking side face down directly on top of the first piece, which is face up. Now you have the two quilted stocking pieces face to face.
-
4
Pin the edges of the stocking together in several locations to hold it in place.
-
5
Stitch the edges of the stocking together starting at the top, stitching down and around the stocking until you are back up to the top area. Do not stitch across the top of the stocking, as this needs to remain open. Use straight-line stitches, sewing in through the top to the bottom and then back up through the bottom to the top. Make your stitches even and very close to the edge, but do not make your stitches loop around the outside edge of the stocking. This can be hand sewn or machine sewn.
-
6
Make a few snips with the scissors in the curve of the stocking to allow for material spreading when you turn the stocking right side out.
-
7
Examine your stitches to make sure that you didn't miss any spots. Turn the stocking right side out, run your hand down inside to push out the sewn seams towards the edges and smooth the stocking from the front with your hand or steam press if necessary. You're all finished with sewing the two sides of a quilted Christmas stocking together.

Tips & Warnings
Before you sew the sides together, you can make a hem on the top of both pieces to give the stocking a more finished look.
Quilted fabrics or hand quilted pieced stocking pieces can be very thick to sew. It is a good idea to make sure that you are using the proper size needle.
