Playing golf is challenging in and of itself, but if you are playing with outdated or inadequate equipment, you may be adding insult to injury. Although a certain degree of natural talent is a prerequisite to a good golf game, players should also take advantage of the many putting aids out there to take a few strokes off their greens game.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a face-balanced putter with a line to help you aim the golf ball. A face-balanced putter should lie parallel to the ground when held in a golfer's hand. If your putter is not properly balanced, your swing will feel "off." The white line helps you find the center of the golf ball as you stroke toward the hole.

  2. Step 2

Buy a two-ball putter. These putters get their name from the pictures of two white golf balls painted on the back of the head of the putter. This helps you line up the club and aim your stroke toward the hole better. Two-ball putters also have a very large clubface and a heavier weight, which adds more control to the stroke.

  3. Step 3

Consider a long putter. These clubs are heavier and taller than standard putters. Golfers stand much closer to the ball when using these clubs. Some players find that long putters provide better control and accuracy. Such clubs have two separate grips so that you hold your hands far apart on the club (unlike a regular putting club, on which you place your hands together). The top of the club is "anchored" near your chest, and your bottom hand handles most of the swing and aiming. Famous users of the long putter include Vijay Singh, Bruce Lietzke and Sam Snead.

  4. Step 4

Invest in an indoor putting practice aid. Mats, putting greens and cups are just a few of the items golfers can buy to practice their strokes at home.
