Using a smoker grill is the first step to properly learning the smoking process. Smoking foods is a technique that dates far back to prehistory, and mastering the skills for a delicious meal is certainly not an overnight process.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the amount of time and effort you want to put into a smoker grill and master the smoking process. This hobby often turns into a fixation and a personal quest for just the right results.

  2. Step 2

Look for a smoker grill that has an offset heat source. This gives you the ability to keep the heat directly away from the food and allow the smoke to travel freely over the food.

  3. Step 3

Consider a water smoker that lets you add water to an internal pan during the smoking process. Water smokers are generally less expensive than other models.

  4. Step 4

Buy a few good smoking and grilling books. Many authors have wildly differing opinions on how to smoke foods and reading several books can provide a healthy balance of ideas.

  5. Step 5

Practice as often as possible to perfect your technique. Ask family and friends if they would like particular cuts of meat smoked alongside your own. This process will help hone smoking skills and provide excellent feedback.

  6. Step 6

Remember the proper temperatures for cooked meat. All pork should read above 160 degrees Fahrenheit, poultry above 180 degrees Fahrenheit and red meat above 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pre-cook some cuts of meat like pork ribs or brisket briefly to shorten smoking times.
  • Prepare to spend hours smoking meats. The smoking process often takes more than 8 hours to complete.
  • Wear proper grilling gloves when handling hot foods.
