Things You'll Need:
- Sufficient fabric for front and back of pillow
- Cutting mat
- Fabric marker
- Straight edge ruler
- Sharp scissors
- Fabric weights, optional
-
Step 1
Smooth your fabric out on a flat surface. If you're using your table, you may want to consider using a cutting mat or a large piece of cardboard to protect the surface while you mark and cut out your pillow.
-
Step 2
Find the straight grain of the fabric before you cut out your pillow. Sometimes it's possible to join the two selvage edges to form a fold in the fabric and lay it out straight without much difficulty. If your fabric is cut crooked or it's an odd shape, you can find the straight grain by pulling a thread out from the entire width or length of the fabric. The small row that's visible after you pull the thread out will be straight with the grain of your fabric.
-
Step 3
Mark your pillow with a fabric marker, allowing a 1-inch seam allowance. If your finished pillow is supposed to be 14 inches, you'll need to cut out two 15-inch squares. If you're a beginner, you may find it easier to mark the seam allowance with a fabric marker and straight edge ruler.
-
Step 4
Cut your pillow top and bottom out at the same time to ensure that they're the same size. You may want to use fabric weights, or some other small weighty objects to hold the fabric in place, while you're cutting. You can also use the straight edge of your ruler to help guide your scissors along the cutting line.

Step 5
Finish all of your marking and cutting, you can begin adding your trim and constructing your decorative pillow.
