Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  1. Step 1

Start Adobe Photoshop, and open an image that contains a color you would like to select.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Magic Wand" tool in the Photoshop toolbox. The "Magic Wand" tool is the fourth tool from the top and looks like a magic wand. You may need to click the bottom right corner of the button if you have the "Quick Selection Tool" as the current button instead of the "Magic Wand."

  3. Step 3

Adjust the tolerance of the color you want to select by typing a number in the "Tolerance" toolbar at the top of the screen. The higher you set the tolerance, the more color it will pick up. The lower the tolerance is set, the less color it will pick up.

  4. Step 4

Click to add a checkmark in the "Contiguous" check box to choose to only select similar or same colors that are right next to each other. If you leave this box unchecked, the "Magic Wand" tool will select all similar colors in the image regardless of their position in relation to each other.

  5. Step 5

Click to select the part of the image that you want to alter. Your cursor will be in the shape of a magic wand as you do so. You will see that the part of the image you have selected will be surrounded by blinking dotted lines. If you would like to increase or decrease the amount that was automatically selected, go up and adjust the tolerance on the tool bar and make the selection again.

  6. Step 6

Perform the effect or action you want to the selected portion of the image.
