Step 1
Decide where the snake will make its home. If you want to keep the pet in sight for all visitors, you should get a small snake and a medium sized aquarium. Reticular pythons and anacondas can grow extremely large and would need an entire room dedicated to housing this pet.
-
Step 2
Determine how large you actually want your snake to get. If you are a beginner to the world of pet snakes, you should get a beginner snake. Ball pythons and corn snakes are considered beginner snakes because they do not get large, are not aggressive. They are also much easier to take care of than other species.

Step 3
Consider small pets and children that live in the same house as the animal. Large and aggressive snakes have been known to attack anything that aggravates them. An unwritten rule encourages people not to purchase a snake if you have a child under the age of 5 in the home.

Step 4
Be sure you are ready for the commitment of a pet snake. They require a great deal of attention. Not only should they be handled to ensure they will be used to humans, but they must be fed and their aquarium cleaned regularly. If you get a large snake, more than one person will be required for the cleaning process.
