How to Feed Pet Snakes

Keeping a pet snake requires special care. If you are a new snake owner, feeding a snake will take some research to familiarize yourself with your snake's eating habits. Without the proper knowledge on how to feed your snake, you may cause illness or even the death of your pet.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you know the species of your snake. This is important because with this knowledge, you can research the diet that is best suited for your snake.

    • 2

Determine whether you need to feed you snake pre-killed prey rather than live prey. Most snakes will require pre-killed food. Be sure to freeze any dead prey such as fish, lizards, worms, frogs, mice or insects. These are easily available at your local pet shop.

    • 3

Prepare a feeding schedule and mark this on your calendar to help keep track of what to feed your snake from one day to the next.

    • 4

Thaw out any frozen food by placing it in warm water for at least half an hour. Once thawed, let it cool down to room temperature before feeding it to your snake.

    • 5

Use a pair of tongs to lower the food into pet's cage. You can also move the food about so that the snake thinks it is alive.

    • 6

Add Calcium and Vitamin D supplements to your pet snake's diet to keep it healthy.

    • 7

Supply your pet with fresh water daily.
