Most cooks know the importance of buying the proper cookware and utensils when preparing a dish such as pasta with Alfredo sauce. It depends on how many you're planning to feed when choosing the size of your cookware, but you can follow the guidelines below for the average family of four.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assemble all the proper ingredients, utensils and cookware before you start making your pasta and sauce. Alfredo sauce is a simple recipe, consisting of butter, cream, garlic, Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley, but the type of cookware you use can make a difference in the outcome.

  2. Step 2

Acquire solid cookware with a heavy bottom, which allows for good heat conduction and even cooking. Your sauce will be less likely to burn, and a good quality pan is less likely to warp over a high heat.

  3. Step 3

Get for a 12-inch skillet that's about 3 inches deep. You need the larger sized pan so you'll have room to toss the cooked pasta with the finished sauce. A nonstick surface offers easier cleanup, but isn't a good choice when cooking with high heat.

  4. Step 4

Heat your water in a large pot that has enough room for the pasta to move around freely while its cooking. One pound of pasta requires 4 quarts of water to cook properly, so a 6-quart pot is a good size to shop for.

  5. Step 5

Purchase a few utensils such as a pasta grabber fork, a whisk, a good chef's knife and a clean cutting board. If you plan to drain your pasta, you may want to have a colander sitting in the sink. You should also have a couple of insulated potholders on hand, some measuring utensils and most importantly your favorite Alfredo sauce recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Nonstick cookware offers easy cleanup, but shouldn't be used if you're cooking with a high heat, because of the fumes that may be emitted.
