How to Do Parkour Safety Rolls

Even though jumping from building ledges to concrete floors might make you think otherwise, parkour's early innovators developed the sport with safety of parkour enthusiasts and the general public as their primary consideration. Safety rolls are one of the most important safety moves that you must master before progressing in the sport.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by kneeling on your left knee on a soft surface like grass. Bend your left arm so that it's slightly rounded and hold it downward and across your body. Look down at the ground so you protect your face going into the roll.

    • 2

Bend at the waist and fall forward and towards your right hip to start the roll. Use your posted leg to propel you forward so that your weight moves more in a forward direction than downwards.

    • 3

Plant your hands to the side of your right hip or even slightly behind it and allow yourself to roll along your left arm, then your left shoulder and upper back. Past the midway point of the roll you should transition your weight so that your lower right back makes contact with the ground.

    • 4

Push all the way through the roll so you pop back up on your right knee and plant your left foot on the ground so you can continue to move the motion of the roll forward rather than downward. Continue through the roll until you get back to your original kneeling position, when you're practicing, or to a standing position, when you're using the safety roll in actual parkour sequences.

Tips & Warnings

  • Configure your roll so that your spine never comes into direct contact with the ground.
