Painting a house is a big task. Even though your house may have less trim than siding, painting the trim may take just as long to complete. Take your time and your newly painted house is bound to be the best looking home on the block.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Painter's masking tape
  • Old newspapers
  1. Step 1

Choose your paint. Painting the trim with a semi-gloss or gloss finish helps to set off the flat color used on the siding. Also this type finish tends to be more durable. While you're at the paint store, remember to pick up brushes and painter's masking tape.

  2. Step 2

Scrape any loose paint from the trim. Remove screens from the windows. Caulk windows as needed. Make sure the caulking is dry before painting over it.

  3. Step 3

Tape papers over the windows to keep paint drips off them. Paint the window sashes and frames. You may need to give the windowsills an extra coat of paint. Open the windows enough so that the paint doesn't dry them shut permanently.

  4. Step 4

Paint the frames of the window screens if they have wooden frames. It's also a good time to mend holes in the screens. Take care not to get paint on the mesh part of the screens.

  5. Step 5

Take the shutters down to paint them if possible. If not, put masking tape around them. Paint the louvered part, and then paint the outside frame.

  6. Step 6

Remove any metal parts from doors to make them easier to paint. Paint inset panels first, then paint the outer trim.

  7. Step 7

Use a small brush to paint the spindles on deck railings. When you finish the spindles, and then finish painting the horizontal pieces.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's always best to paint from the top down no matter what part of the trim you are painting.
  • Use extreme caution if you need to use a ladder to paint the trim on your house.
