Sanding is an essential step in the car painting process. Without a smooth surface to start with, the paint and top coat will show the imperfections of the car's body. While sanding is not difficult, it is important to be patient and thorough and to have the right supplies for the job.

From Quick Guide: Maintenance Jobs
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Allow the primer to dry on the part of the car you intend to paint. The bumper of your car is a good example and starting point, if you have not done any sanding before. Apply the primer according to the instructions on the can and allow it to dry completely.

  2. Step 2

Gather the items you will need for the sanding process. This should include a bucket of warm water with mild dish soap mixed in and 320 gauge sandpaper. Buy more sandpaper than you think you need, in case you go through it faster or decide to cover a larger area than originally intended.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the way you are going to sand. This could be in horizontal strokes or small circles. It doesn't matter which way you choose, as long as you use the same technique for the entire job.

  4. Step 4

Sand the bumper. Make sure to sand one area until the color is gone, then you can move on to the next section. Start on one side of the bumper and work your way across, completing one area at a time.
