Many mechanics will perform an oil change on your vehicle for a reasonable price. But if you'd rather change your oil yourself, there are some tools you'll need to purchase before you begin. Use the information below to learn how to buy the equipment needed to change the oil in your car.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make a list of everything you need and go buy it before you jack up your car. The last thing you need is to have to make another run to the store in the middle of changing the oil.
Step2
Find a good auto parts store that has all the equipment you'll need. When choosing a store, take into account the friendliness and knowledge of the staff. A good salesperson will help you find exactly what you need and answer any questions you may have.
Step3
Buy an oil filter wrench, which is a specialized tool used to remove the old oil filter.
Step4
Find a good ratchet and socket set. You may also need a crescent wrench, depending on the type of vehicle you drive.
Step5
Invest in a quality jack and jack stands to support car. It's extremely important that you use jack stands instead of relying on the jack to hold up the vehicle. Never risk getting underneath a car that is being held up by a jack only. Unfortunately, jacks sometimes break or fall over; if you're under the car when it happens you could be seriously injured or killed.
Step6
Remember to buy a new oil filter and 4 to 8 quarters of oil. Check your owner's manual for information on what type of filter to get and how many quarts of oil you'll need.
Step7
Pick up two funnels and a metal or plastic oil pan. You'll slide the oil pan under the car to hold the oil as it drains out of your vehicle. Use one of the funnels to transfer the oil from the oil pan to secure containers for storage and transfer to a recycling facility. Use the other funnel to avoid making a mess when you add the new oil to your car.
