How to Apply Eyeliner to the Bottom Rim of the Eye

Adding eyeliner to the bottom rim of your eye gives your eyes definition and a finished look. Eyeliner pencils work great on this area of the eye, as they glide on easier and involve less mess. Eye shadow applied with an eyeliner brush gives your eyes definition as well as a soft, natural look.

Things You'll Need:

• Eyeliner pencil
• Eyeliner pencil sharpener
• Angled eyeliner brush
• Eye shadow

1. Choose the eyeliner pencil color you want to use. Eyeliner colors can be fun--depending on your eye color and hair color, you can wear a number of shades. Black eyeliner looks great on people with dark hair and brunettes and dark blondes can usually wear brown eyeliner well.

2. Sharpen your pencil with a sharpener specifically made for eyeliners. Gently rub your index finger over the point so that it turns to a soft nub. Keep an eyeliner pencil sharpener on hand to use as needed.

3. Pull your lower lid down gently with your non-dominant hand. Apply the eyeliner to the bottom rim of your eye, starting at your outer crease and move toward the inner crease. Make a series of small marks and connect them as you move along the lash line.

4. Dip an angled eyeliner brush into an eye shadow if you prefer not to use a pencil. Eye shadow applied with an eyeliner brush gives your eyes a softer look and can be easier to apply. You also have more color choices with eye shadow.

Tips & Warnings

• If you want a more natural look, match your eyeliner color to your mascara. Blue eyeliner mixed with brown mascara gives a confusing look.
• Applying eyeliner on your upper and lower eyelids all around the eye can make your eyes look smaller. If you have small eyes, don't extend the eyeliner on the bottom rim all the way to the inner and outer corner. Apply eyeliner in middle of the bottom rim, making sure not to reach the corners of the eye.
