Things You'll Need:
- Deep-set faucet sockets
-
Step 1
Purchase a new stem exactly like the old one. Different brands of faucets use different stems and parts are not interchangeable. It's a good idea to take the stem with you when you're purchasing a new one. Even though you may know the brand, you may not know the exact model.
-
Step 2
Turn the stem to the "on" position. To do this you turn the long tube in a counter clockwise direction as you hold the base. You can see the end as it pulls toward the middle. Once it's flat to the base, you're ready to install the faucet stem.
-
Step 3
Insert the stem into the hole for the faucet handle. Make certain the threads are lined up. When you install a faucet stem, stripping the threads is one hazard that you can avoid if you tighten it slowly.
-
Step 4
See if there is unusual resistance. Don't continue but remove the stem and begin again. Once you feel the movement into the opening is a smooth process, you know that it's correct.
-
Step 5
Tighten the stem down with a deep-set faucet socket. Once you have begun the process with your hands, you need to use tools to finish it. The deep-set faucet socket fits over the stem and into the hole where other wrenches wouldn't work. Snug it down without over-tightening.
