If you find that the stem is bad when you're fixing a leaky bathtub faucet, you need to remove it and replace it with a new one. When you install the new stem for the bathtub faucet, you need to follow a few steps to get the desired results.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deep-set faucet sockets
  1. Step 1

Purchase a new stem exactly like the old one. Different brands of faucets use different stems and parts are not interchangeable. It's a good idea to take the stem with you when you're purchasing a new one. Even though you may know the brand, you may not know the exact model.

  2. Step 2

Turn the stem to the "on" position. To do this you turn the long tube in a counter clockwise direction as you hold the base. You can see the end as it pulls toward the middle. Once it's flat to the base, you're ready to install the faucet stem.

  3. Step 3

Insert the stem into the hole for the faucet handle. Make certain the threads are lined up. When you install a faucet stem, stripping the threads is one hazard that you can avoid if you tighten it slowly.

  4. Step 4

See if there is unusual resistance. Don't continue but remove the stem and begin again. Once you feel the movement into the opening is a smooth process, you know that it's correct.

  5. Step 5

Tighten the stem down with a deep-set faucet socket. Once you have begun the process with your hands, you need to use tools to finish it. The deep-set faucet socket fits over the stem and into the hole where other wrenches wouldn't work. Snug it down without over-tightening.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before you replace the stem, check the seat to make certain that it's in good condition. Put your finger in the hole the stem goes into and turn it around to check for nicks. If there are cracks or rough spots in the seat, replacing the stem does you no good. The bottom of the new stem is subject to the same wear from the seat. Get a good seat repair kit or change the seat.
