Taking a few steps before you store a lawnmower for the winter can save you problems in the spring when the grass seems to shoot up before your very eyes. With a little maintenance you can keep your lawnmower running smoothly in the next season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Scraper
  • Tarp
  • Bungee cords
  • Rocks or weights
  1. Step 1

Drain the oil and gas or mix in a fuel stabilizer before winter storage. Now is a good time to clean and re-oil the air filter sponge, or replace it if needed.

  2. Step 2

Clean the lawnmower deck by brushing off grass clippings and dirt, then use running water to gently spray away the rest of the dirt on the deck.

  3. Step 3

Tip the mower deck up and use a putty knife or scraper to remove all the encrusted dirt on the underneath side of the deck.

  4. Step 4

Check the blade at this time to see if it needs sharpening. You can remove it now and take it for sharpening and balancing or make a note to do it in the spring.

  5. Step 5

Let the mower dry completely before covering it with waterproof material, to limit rusting.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the lawnmower with the tarp, fastening it with bungee cords and place rocks or other heavy objects on the edges of the tarp to hold it down or store it in a shed or garage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always tip your mower in the direction advised by your maintenance manual. Tipping it in the wrong direction can cause oil to seep into places it shouldn't.
  • Don't hang your lawnmower up by the handle to store it for the winter. Any remaining fluids could seep out.
