The slap and block sweep across the body or face is a defensive technique in Kung Fu. When under attack a quick block gives a person time to plan their next move. Below are guidelines to using the slap and block technique under practice conditions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Face your partner with legs comfortably apart. You should be a couple of feet apart. It is a good idea to perform these steps on a gymnastic mat or other soft floor covering in case of a fall.

  2. Step 2

Allow your partner to attempt at right arm punch to your head. Of course, no matter how slow you are practicing the slap and block, your partner should not attempt to actually make contact with your head.

  3. Step 3

Bring your right arm, bent at the elbow, up and across the face to block the opponent and protect your face.

  4. Step 4

Lift your left arm up to cover the head and use the left wrist and hand to block your partner's punch. Step 4 should occur simultaneously with step 3.

  5. Step 5

Push the right elbow into the upper arm and chest of your partner.

  6. Step 6

Use the right forearm to push forward and down on partner's right elbow joint. This causes the attempted punch to go off course. Step 5 and 6 should occur rapidly after each other in a fluid movement.

  7. Step 7

Twist the body around to follow the right arm until you are slightly behind and to the side of your partner. Here a retaliatory punch from you is a way of continuing the technique.
