Grabbing wrists to disarm a victim is a technique frequently utilized by attackers. In Kung Fu there are numerous techniques for getting out of wrists grabs. The crane technique includes defenses for a single wrist grab, a double grab and an upper arm grab. All three moves are below.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Single Wrist Grab

  1. Step 1

Stand a few feet away from your partner facing each other. It is always a good idea to work on a gym mat or soft floor in case of a fall.

  2. Step 2

Let your partner grab your right wrist with both of their hands. These moves are for practicing escape techniques only and there should be no pressure or pain to the wrist.

  3. Step 3

Make a fist with your right hand and lower your left hand below the right wrist with palm down and hand open and flat.

  4. Step 4

Grab your own right wrist with left hand and push down.

  5. Step 5

Return to an upright position and push your partner away with your right hand to his left shoulder. As your partner is off balance from your sudden movement in step 3, this should be enough for them to topple backwards so you can make your escape.

  6. Single Hand Grabs Each Wrist

  7. Step 1

Let your partner grab each of your wrists with each of his hands. This means your partner's left hand grabs your right wrists and your partner's right hand grabs your left wrist. Your hands should be open and angled slightly outward with thumbs facing down.

  8. Step 2

Bring your hands into closed fists with thumbs on the outside as you draw your arms up towards your chest.

  9. Step 3

Twist your arms outward as you pull up before snapping down on your partner's arms. This forces your partner to let go of both of your wrists and puts her off balance.

  10. Step 4

Step forward, open your fists and use flat palms to push your partner with both hands into both shoulders. This should push him off balance.

  11. Two Hand Grab on Upper Arm

  12. Step 1

Let your partner grab your right arm with both of his hands. Your partner's right hand should be higher gripping inside of upper arm and left hand slightly lower gripping outside of your upper arm.

  13. Step 2

Use your left hand to come under your right fist and use as leverage as you pull up your right arm towards and over to the left side of your body.

  14. Step 3

Grab your right fist with left hand and sharply flip right arm back towards right hand side of the body. This will cause your partner to release their grip and lose their balance.

  15. Step 4

Pull your arms back in toward your body before opening palms and using them together to push on partner's right shoulder. This should knock them off balance so you can make your escape.
