Kickboxing has become an extremely popular form of exercise in the United States, as it challenges both the mind and body, sculpting the muscles and strengthening the body as it builds self-confidence and teaches basic self-defense moves. An important part of kickboxing is learning defense technique. With just a few tips you can learn to successfully block oncoming leg kicks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sparring partner
  1. Step 1

Watch your opponent and try to see the kick before or as it is coming towards you.

  2. Step 2

Bend your knee high and try to absorb the impact with the meaty part of your calf or thigh on the side of your leg, when you expect the kick. Do not turn your leg towards the kick or it could impact on the bone and injure you.

  3. Step 3

Prepare to block a kick at any height by combining the leg lift block technique with an arm block technique. As you lift your leg with bent knee, bend your arm in defense position and bring your elbow near to your bent and lifted knee and your hand to the side of your head. If your attacker kicks high, the kick should be absorbed into the side of your arm, instead of your waist, neck or head.

  4. Step 4

Keep your arms up in defense position at all times. After blocking a kick, if you have maintained good kickboxing technique, you should be able to counter the attack with a punch or kick of your own.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice your kickboxing blocking techniques with an experienced sparring partner. It is important that your partner have as much or more experience in kickboxing as you, to help prevent injury. Keep your kicks soft and gentle. Once you have mastered this technique with a partner, you can use it in competition or as a means of defense.
